This means any phones introduced in 2016 or earlier, including the iPhone 6S, iPhone SE and iPhone 7, won't be getting Apple software updates anymore. It's not an unexpected move, given that the company regularly retires software support on older devices. To be clear, if you have an older device, it and all your apps should continue to work for now even without the update with all the shiny new features. But since you won't be getting new iOS updates, that could leave your device vulnerable to hacks and malware because software updates also often include patches for bugs. Apple may continue to offer some security updates to these older devices, as it's done with iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 devices. But even if it does, it's likely the updates will only include critical vulnerabilities, which could still leave devices open to attack. The earliest iPhone capable of supporting iOS 15 is the 6S, a couple of years older than the 8 so you have some time to go yet. Apple One of the selling points of iPhones and iPads is that you'll get several years of prompt software updates, released at the same time to all devices regardless of your specific model or cellular carrier. On Monday, Apple announced iOS and iPadOS 16, and those new versions come with a new set of minimum hardware requirements. Apple's press release and preview page say that the OS will support "iPhone 8 and later." That means that the new update won't be compatible with phones using Apple A9 or A10 chips, including the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, the first-gen iPhone SE, and the seventh-generation iPod Touch. Frustrating as it can be for users of older hardware to discover that they'll no longer be receiving software updates, Apple's iPhones and iPads still enjoy dramatically better update support than most Android phones. Google's Pixel devices are usually the best you can get, and they promise five years of security patches but only three years of Android version updates (less, for older phones).
