Sarah McLachlan has poked fun at the ad in the past. Show
May 7, 2014— -- Do those anti-animal abuse ads featuring singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan make you want to turn away from the TV set? The ads intend to pull at your heartstrings so the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA, can rescue animals in danger and pass legislation to protect furry creatures. But, it turns out, the depressing ads even bum out the woman starring in them -- to the point that McLachlan changes the channel when they air. During the Canadian musician's Ask Me Anything session on Reddit this week, in which she promotes her new album, "Shine On," a reader noted, "Hi Sarah. Those ASPCA commercials bum me out so I change the channel. Just thought you should know." McLachlan wrote, "I change the channel too. It’s the kitten with the droopy eye, or the 3-legged dog, bless them, it kills me.” The ASPCA did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Watch: Sarah McLachlan Performs 'Beautiful Girl' McLachlan has poked fun at herself and the ASPCA ads before, such as when she was featured in an Audi Super Bowl ad earlier this year. In that ad, McLachlan sang about raising awareness of a hybrid "Doberhuahua" dog. It’s happened to all of us. You’re happily watching TV and then you hear the music. Next comes those sad faces. You run for the remote and change the channel as fast as possible in an effort to minimize the emotional damage. That’s how it goes whenever a Sarah McLachlan “Angel” commercial for the ASPCA comes on. But ever wonder how McLachlan herself feels about them? Apparently, just like you do. “I can’t watch them!” she recently told the video blog Makers. “It just kills me.” But clearly, someone’s watching. McLachlan, 47, revealed those ads have raised over $30 million for the ASPCA. “Obviously the mix of the music and my sad face,” explains the singer of the PSA’s tremendous success. “But it was brutal doing those ads.” However they also enabled McLachlan to reach a whole new fan base. “I got a whole new audience out of it,” she says. “I swear I’d be at Target in Missouri at 10 o’clock at night getting off the tour bus and I’d be going down the aisle and these two little old ladies would be like, ‘Are you that dog lady? I love that song!’ Daily. Daily this would happen.” Remember those heartbreaking ASPCA commercials? You know the ones—Sarah McLachlan's song, "Angel," starts playing and you immediately want to flip the channel because otherwise you might burst into tears while photos of hurt animals flash across the screen. You kind of feel bad when you do flip the channel, but don't worry—you're not alone. Sarah McLachlan can't even handle them. "I can't watch them! It kills me," she told Makers. And of the commercial-making experience, she admitted "it was brutal...[it was] just killing me." Brutal, yes. But for a good cause? You bet. The commercial originally aired in 2007, and managed to raise $30 million in the first two years of its release, according to The New York Times. It's the most successful fundraising effort for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, so clearly those who are able to withstand watching the ad know it's important. That, or those who can't still make a donation anyway. Either way, it works, and we're happy puppies and kittens are being taken care of. More From RedbookThis content is imported from youTube.
