How to get health insurance in illinois

This section of the website will tell you how to apply for health coverage through Medicaid or the Marketplace.

There are two main types of health coverage this website will help you understand, apply for, and use – Medicaid and Marketplace insurance. If you know which program you are eligible for, click one of the buttons below to get started.

If you don’t know which program you should choose, keep reading.

Medicaid is a health insurance program from the state that provides coverage to millions of people in Illinois, including most low-income people, families and children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

The Health Insurance Marketplace, or “the Marketplace,” is the website where you can shop for and buy discounted health insurance. Illinois residents use HealthCare.gov to find health insurance plans on the Marketplace.

In Illinois, the best way to find out which program you might be eligible for is to use the screening tool on the Marketplace.

You can also check if you are eligible for Medicaid by using the State of Illinois’ Application for Benefits Eligibility (ABE) screening tool, under “Check if I should Apply.”

If you still aren’t sure if you should apply for insurance from the Marketplace or Medicaid, don’t worry- both applications will ask you questions to get the information needed to find out which program is right for you. If you apply for the wrong program, your application will be sent to the right place. However, this may take longer. You can always contact a Navigator or Assister to set up a free appointment for in-person help.
