Why cant I share someones post on Instagram?

Instagram is one of the world’s most popular social media networks right now and comes with a slew of features to keep its users connected. However, not all of these features work as intended.

There are times where you might run into issues with features randomly stopping working or don’t even show up in the app. In this article, we’re going to talk about why you can’t share Instagram posts to your Story and how you can fix that.

Here are the four main reasons that could cause the unable to share Instagram posts to Stories issue.

Account type

The ‘Add post to story’ feature only works if the post you’re trying to share comes from a public account. Always make sure the post you’re trying to share isn’t from a private account.

Sharing permissions for posting to Story

Even if the post you’re trying to share comes from a public account, there’s a chance that the account holder might have disabled post sharing. This can prevent you from adding posts to your stories. 

Here’s how this setting can be changed. 

• Open the Instagram app and head over to your profile by tapping your profile picture in the bottom right. 
• Tap on the hamburger menu icon on the top right.
• Tap the Settings option.
• Head over to Privacy.

• Now tap on Story.
• Toggle the Allow Resharing to Stories option to what you want.

This is one of the most common reasons why you can’t share Instagram posts to Story.

Instagram’s random glitches

If you’re still unable to see the app’s feature, chances are something wrong with Instagram itself. Features usually roll out in phases, which means not everyone gets the same features simultaneously. Features can often go missing at random as well. In a recent update, Instagram said that they would tell you if Instagram is facing an issue.

Instagram might’ve disabled the feature for you

Earlier this year, in January, Instagram started disabling the ability to share or reshare posts to Stories for several users in selected countries. According to the company, they’re doing this because fewer people want to see the identical posts in both the feed and Story.

While it remains unclear which countries they’re testing this in, the notification comes with a ‘Testing a change to Sharing to Stories’ followed by ‘We hear from our community that they want to see fewer feed posts in stories. During this test, you won’t be able to add a feed post to your story‘.

Try these solutions to resolve the ‘can’t share Instagram posts to my Story’ issue.

Toggle the resharing setting on and off

As mentioned above, you can enable or disable sharing posts to stories. If you’re having issues, use the same steps as above and toggle the setting back on and off again or vice versa. 

Once done, restart your phone and give it another go. 

Reinstall the Instagram app

Reinstalling an app can often resolve seemingly random issues. If you do not see the ‘share to story’ feature in your app, you can try uninstalling the app, restarting your phone, and installing it again. This should fix the ‘can’t share Instagram posts to my Story’ error.

Try clearing the cache

If you’re on Android, clearing the cache can help eliminate buggy cache files that might stop the feature from working.

• Head over to your phone’s settings and tap on Apps & notifications.
• Tap on All apps.
• Find Instagram in this list and tap on it to open the app settings.
• Tap on Storage & cache.
• Tap on Clear cache to clear out the cache and start afresh.

Try logging in from another phone

This is a bit of an odd one, but the solution has reportedly worked for many users. If you can’t see any such options on your phone, try logging in from another phone, and you might fix your issue.

Try a new account

As a last resort, if you’re relatively new to Instagram, you can try making a new account. Most new accounts have the latest features enabled and working just fine.

However, if you can’t, the best you can do is wait, and in time, the ‘can’t share Instagram posts to my Story’ issue will get resolved with an update to either the Instagram app or your smartphone.
