Serena Williams entered her second WTA tournament ahead of the 2022 US Open, which begins in late August.
On Tuesday, the Western & Southern Open released its entry list, which included the 23-time Grand Slam champion.
Williams is a two-time champion of the Cincinnati tournament (2014, ‘15). The last time the 40-year-old entered two US WTA Series tournaments before the US Open was in 2015. She was able to enter the tournament this year based on her protected ranking.
The tournament takes place from Aug. 13 through the 21. This means Williams will be playing back-to-back weeks after she previously entered the National Bank Open taking place in Toronto starting Aug. 5.
Both of these tournaments are seen as US Open warm-up hard court tournaments. The last Grand Slam of the year begins the week after the Western & Southern Open finishes on Aug. 29. Williams has yet to officially commit to the US Open, though.
With her commitment, Williams once again shuts down retirement rumors following her return to tennis at this year’s Wimbledon a few weeks ago. She played at Eastbourne, the tournament prior to Wimbledon, in the doubles tournament with Ons Jabeur.
Williams then lost in the first round of Wimbledon, which quickly sparked the retirement rumors, especially after she didn’t give a clear answer about her future in tennis.
Even if the 40-year-old tennis legend isn’t at the top of her game right now, it seems that she wants to continue playing and make efforts at winning another major. Williams currently is one Grand Slam title away from tying Margaret Court for the most in tennis history.

Serena Williams’ first round singles tennis match takes place on Tuesday (June 28).
She is up against French player Harmony Tan, who is currently ranked 113th in the world.
The order of play for Wimbledon day two has just been released. Williams will be the third match on centre court, so will play later this afternoon after Rafael Nadal’s match against Francisco Cerundolo.
UK viewers can watch the match on BBC where coverage is being shown live – either on BBC One, BBC Two or iPlayer.
If Williams wins, she will face either world 32 Sara Sorribes Tormo (Spain) or Christina McHale (US) who is ranked 261.
Serena Williams is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, having won more grand slams than any Open Era player – male or female.
She has lifted the Wimbledon trophy seven times in her career, which has spanned for more than 20 years.
The veteran was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon 2021 after suffering a torn hamstring while playing on centre court.
This is her 21st appearance at the London grass court tournament.

There will be several tennis champions set to perform at Wimbledon 2022 this year, including Serena Williams. The 40-year-old will be playing her first-round match on the second day of the event on Tuesday, June 28.
The seven-time Wimbledon singles winner is once again set to be a fans' favourite at the event this year. She will play Harmony Tan, who is currently ranked 113th in the world, in the first round.
But what time does Serena play on Tuesday? Here is what we know so far.

The match is set to take place on Centre Court and it will be the third and final game to be played there on Tuesday. On court before her will be women's number one Iga Swiatek against Jana Fett, and Francisco Cerundolo facing Rafael Nadal.
The action on Centre Court begins from 1.30pm and the start time for Serena Williams will be dependant on how long the other matches last. They could step onto the court by 5pm, but it could be a later start time if the matches last longer.
Williams has won more grand slam singles titles than any Open Era player ever. After suffering an injury while playing on centre court at Wimbledon last year, the veteran was forced to pull out of the tournament.
