How do you put a YouTube video on Google slides on a Chromebook?

A good video clip mixed into a presentation can be helpful in emphasizing a point, illustrating a concept, or just providing a quick comedic moment. If you use Google Slides, you have a few ways to insert videos into your presentations. You can use YouTube, use Google Drive, or use the Screencastify Google Slides add-on.

Screencastify Google Slides add-on

Screencastify is a massively popular tool for creating screencast videos. It will work on Chromebooks and any other computer. Last fall I used it with eighth grade students to make videos about forms of energy.

A convenient feature of Screencastify is that the videos you make are automatically saved to your Google Drive. From there you can insert them directly into a Google Slides presentation. But an even easier way is to use the Screencastify Google Slides add-on.

The Screencastify Google Slides add-on lets you access all of the videos that you have recorded with Screencastify without having to ever leave the slideshow that youre working on. With the add-on installed you can simply click view Screencastify videos and they will appear in the margin of your slide editor. Then just click the one you want to include in your slide.

Insert Videos from Google Drive into Your Google Slides

I record a lot of videos on my phone (mostly of my kids, but some of other things that end up in presentations). Those videos get backed-up to my Google Drive where I can then easily add them into slide presentations. You can do this by going to the Insert menu then choosing Video followed by Google Drive in your Google Slides editor. Watch this short video to see the process.

Specify Start and Stop Times for Videos in Slides

There are times when you dont need to play the entirety of a video in your slideshow. You can just try to fast-forward to the part that you need and then stop it when youve shown what you want the audience to see. Or you can be precise and efficient by using the formatting tools to specify start and stop times for your chosen video. Watch this short video to see how that is done.
